Apple Music FriendRecs

Team: Melanie McGrath & Michel Faliski

Background: Melanie and I came together to solve a problem through design. Through user research, we discovered the difficulty Apple Music users were experiencing when they wanted to share music. Here’s the solution we proposed.

Since the beginning, Apple has put art and music at the forefront of its services.

Sharing is in ours.

A survey was designed and completed by 200 interns and 106 members of the general public who used music streaming services. Participants were asked how often they shared music with others. Greater than 3 songs a week defined the user as an active music sharer.

With the survey data in mind, we took a closer look at the current user experience sharing a song with someone through iMessage.

Never lose a recommendation. Making sharing music effective for the user and the platform. The user friendly experience and personalization of the platform will drive subscriptions, reduce overall churn, and increase retention + platform loyalty.

The best recommendations come from your friends. No matter how many songs your music loving friend sends you, they’ll always be there when you get back, all in one place.
